AbstractSpecial; Metromedia Playhouse; Growing Pains; black screen breaks; Act 1: Ralph Waite, Lisa Richards, and Katherine Borowitz portray a couple (Waite and Richards) managing their lives alongside the 26-year-old differently-abled daughter of Waite; (Rob) Waite and (Andi) Richards struggle to learn about each other in Waite's apartment while (Helen) Borowitz becomes distressed by discussions about her mental capacity; they demonstrate intimacy, and talk about worries that parenting Waite's daughter presents; the daughter watches Jabberwocky while the couple eats dinner, but a mess is created over spilled milk; Act II opens with Richards and Borowitz entering the hardware store where Waite works and talk about the party that the two women visited at a group home; Waite and Richards talk about his daughter going to live at a group home; Rob and Andi talk about marriage and then they discuss with Helen about living in the group home; Helen becomes angry at the prospect of separating from her father; Rob reveals the cause of his daughter's condition; Rob and Andi argue and he sends her away; Helen and Rob talk about the future of Rob aging; Helen shares some newly-learned sign language with her father; ACT III opens with the three of them at the group home during a Christmas celebration; Helen is invited to participate in the pageant; an older resident, Melvin, offers the three of them a cup of coffee; they talk about what makes someone die, and about handling fear; Andi and Rob decide to separate, but Helen objects; Helen insists that the couple kiss, make up, and that there are no more good-byes; Helen settles in with her new friends and the couple leave the group home together;
