Chronicle: Adult Illiteracy; commercials included; the vast majority of illiterate are white and native-born; the nation takes literacy for granted though so much of the nation does not have adequate grade-level competency; it is predicted that by 1990 a 12-grade reading competency will be required for every job in the U.S.; 25 million Americans are estimated to be illiterate, and tutors are helping to bridge the gap; parents who learned to read and write late in life are adamant that their children learn these skills earlier; Mike Barnicle shares his thoughts on the literacy necessity; 'Who's the Boss' intro and credits;
