Label on tape: 'Update: K.D.A.' // Report on annual Dump Week Festival in Kennebunkport that lasts all summer. Interview with Ed Mayo, president of the Kennebunk Dump Association about the event and his interest in preserving the history of dumps. Shot of 1973 ìMiss Dumpyî queen.
Jennifer Higgins Hagan, Coast Star Staff writer December 19, 2002 The parade was started in 1965 by the Kennebunkport Dump Association, a 40-member group with one president and 39 vice presidents. The last dump parade was held in 1982. "No workers allowed," said Stan Meserve, one of the three founding members of the association and parade with artist Ed Mayo and Henry Gunzelmann. President Mayo was the big push on the organization, Meserve said. According to Meserve, a lifetime membership was 50 cents, but the association had no goals, except for the odd stealing of each other's trash bins or depositing a toilet on Mayo's front lawn. The organization started because people just enjoyed meeting at the dump, drinking beer and shooting rats, Meserve said.
