BACKGROUND: 'Going to the Movies' is an exhibition that explores the history of movies and movie-going in northern New England, from the first moving images to the multiplexes of today. It is about people and their communities, how cinemas continue to bring us together. Funded by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Project Director: Karan Sheldon. Jeffords' legislative liaison for arts and humanities, gives a talk 'Future of arts funding: a legislative outlook.' (14 May). 2. Susan Kennedy-Kalafatis, Department of Geography, University of Vermont, talks about who we are in northern New England, mapping our ancestries (15 May). Tape 15: 1. Denise Youngblood, Department of History, University of Vermont, gives a talk 'From Nickelodeons to Palaces: Audiences and Venues 1896-1918' (16 May). 2. Andre Senecal, Professor of French and Canadian Studies, University of Vermont, gives a talk 'Franco-Americans and the Movies' (19 May). Tape 16: Tom Streeter, Department of Sociology, University of Vermont gives a talk 'New Technologies and the Same Old Language' (20 May). Tape 17: Martha Day, media reference specialist, Bailey/Howe Library, University of Vermont and a founder of the Vermont EarthPeace International Film Festival gives a talk on 'contemporary audiences' (21 May). Tape 18: Greg Sharrow, director of education, Vermont Folklife Center, gives a talk 'Sharing Family Traditions and Stories' (22 May). Tape 19: Dona Brown, Department of History, University of Vermont, talks about northern New England vacationing early in the century (23 May). Tape 20: Glenn Andres, Art Department, Middlebury College gives a talk 'Vermont Communities and Community Entertainment' (24 May). Tape 21: Leger Grindon, Film and Television Studies, Middlebury College shares his research on Hollywood boxing films (28 May). Tape 22: Kathryn H. Fuller, author of 'At the Picture Show: Small Towns and the Creation of Fan Culture in the Silent Film Era,' talks about stereotypes of rural moviegoers such as 'Uncle Josh' (29 May).
