An unidentified University of Maine scientist is interviewed in response to complaints from the Orono and Old Town area about the black fly problem; he says the situation has gotten worse recently and only abates when cold weather sets in; the treatment for black flies includes spraying from helicopters and airplanes; concern from the fisheries, however, required that monitoring be in place and that has halted some of the applications; the spray in use is less effective than DDT and more expensive; he goes on to talk about community action for mosquito control; he describes the differences in which kinds of habitats the black flies and mosquitos develop: black flies prefer swift waters like trout streams, while mosquitos prefer still woodland pools; they do not live in grass; funding for research is being sought, he says;
