Collection contains documentaries. "A Question of Survival: Washington County, Maine" depicts regional family history and one winter of life and work. Works by Machias Memorial High School students include "Machias Renaissance," concerning the revitalization of Machias, and "Batteau Machias," which records an industrial arts project to build and use a traditional batteau river boat. Collection also contains student-produced interviews and outtakes: "Carlton Willey," showing the retired player at age 60 discussing his career and aspects of baseball, and two videotapes of interviews with women who worked in one-room schools.
Machias Memorial High School is located in coastal Machias, Washington County; in 1991, the school had roughly 200 students. Carlton Willey was a major league baseball player from Cherryfield, named Rookie of the Year in 1958. The Batteau Machias project resulted from a 1988 classroom showing of "From Stump to Ship: A 1930 Logging Film." "A Question of Survival" was produced by William Kenda and the Maine Humanities Council.
