Benedict, Herbert Collection
1924 – 1933
Collection contains [Albert Benedict--home movies], depicting coastal and wooded scenery in Maine, primarily in Medomak but also on Monhegan Island, Cranberry, Burnt, and Allen Islands, and Mt. Katahdin. The Monhegan footage has views of the village, family frolics, and fishing. The vacation footage includes a Medomak boys camp, swimming, camping, kite flying, cookouts, a wedding, and gardens. Scenes outside Maine feature an amusement park, West Point, and views around Washington, D.C. Several reels include intertitles and the photography is well shot and composed.
The Benedicts, a New York family, owned a waterfront home in Medomak, Maine, called Summer’s Nest. Monhegan Island has been a summer artists’ colony for a hundred years.
