Young woman is betrayed by squire who pretends to marry her, fathers her child, and abandons her. Baby dies, and heroine finds works as a domestic in a rural household. Falls in love with young man of the family. Her secret is found out, and she rushes out into snowstorm. Famous ice floe scene. Rescue and marriage.
