Watching Birds; BBI Communications and Houghton Mifflin Company Present Birds; Roger Tory Peterson is the host; birds in a variety of activities with a voiceover that reports birds are everywhere and are interesting; there are 9,000 species, and all have feathers, and not all can fly; to bird watch one needs only learn how to listen, how to look and what to look for; Roger Tory Peterson is seen in the field; he talks about why he is interested in birds; he suggests bird watchers have a good pair of binoculars with 6 or 7 times magnification, a field guide, and a friend with some competence in bird identification; time of year and known location are helpful in narrowing which birds might be seen; size and shape of the bird, shape of the bill, and tail shape help with identification; wing shape or use of the wings can also help in identification; unusual behaviors help, too; there are eight basic visual categories in some field guides to help with identification; then field marks on the birds help to identify it; bird song, nesting, and bathing are described and observed; Peterson visits with penguins in Antarctica; dozens of North American birds are given individual identification attention in the second half of this presentation;
