President John F. Kennedy is given an honorary degree at University of Maine, Orono homecoming weekend. Arrives at UM by helicopter as crowds cheer from football field. JFK wears academic robes and is escorted to platform with Reed, Muskie, McIntire and Smith. Profile MS of JFK at lectern. Speech begins with academic references (Cambridge and Oxford) and continues on to the Cuban missile crisis of the previous year. Central theme is current and future relations with Soviet Union. After speech, JFK receives honorary doctor of laws from UM President Elliott. The school song is sung. VO anchor and Dick Bronson summarize speech as Kennedy shakes hands on platform, then exits through crowd. LS helicopter.
