Live interview with Maine Governor Joseph Brennan. Host: Don Carrigan. Interviewers: V. Paul Reynolds (Bangor Daily News), Russ Van Arsdale, WLBZ; Brennan talks about his reflections on President Reagan's state of the union address and its implications for Maine, particularly in the areas of unemployment, the tax cuts for big companies, support of social programs; he criticized the President's statement at other times that the poor could vote with their feet and move out of one state and into another if they don't like the programs available in poor states; Brennan says he believes that education is a state responsibility, but there are some things that ought to be more strongly supported by the federal government; Paul Reynolds disagrees with Brennan's assessment of Reagan's programs; the discussion moves to difference of views about where responsibility rests for all the population: at nationhood or statehood; tax-bracket creep and indexing are discussed; the recording ends at the commercial break; [see also Acc. 1458.0255]
