circa 1926
Footage of Charles W. Morgan (whaling ship) shot in New Bedford MA. Donor's notes, 5/96: The film was shot by an unidentified New York filmmaker hired by Col. H.R. Green, whose estate contained the ship Morgan. Shown in footage are Harry Neyland (in white hat) and Captain George Fred Tilton (noted whaling master) as they greet Colonel Green, who arrives in his private automobile. Note that the car door was customized to accommodate Col. Green's disability. The scene is Memorial Day ca.1926. The sails are 'set' on the Morgan, the crew is checking the Morgan's 'down hauls' and sheets of the jibs on the foredeck and on the jib boom. Captain Tilton shakes hands with Colonel Green, who does not leave the car. Tilton bows curtly, appropriate when greeting Green who is a country squire, owning the great estate at Round Hills, New Bedford, Mass. Green established 'Whaling Enshrined' (a club) to preserve the Morgan as a memorial to whaling in New Bedford. One aspect of the footage of particular interest is the status of smoking it shows: all three men, Neyland (former part owner of the Morgan), Tilton and Green are smoking extensively on pipes and cigarettes.
