1953
Reel 66 contains footage that was used for Charles S. Houston’s series of talks, “Fifty Years of Going Higher,” which relates to a study on the effects of high altitude on human physiology. Includes extensive footage of the American Alpine Club’s 1953 Expedition to K2, including the climbers at various campsites packing up gear, digging out their tents and equipment and relaxing, as well as the men hiking, climbing, checking the ground for sink holes in the snow and lounging in a spring. Reel 66 also includes footage of the porters hiking with gear and supplies and carrying George Bell down the mountain on a stretcher at the end of the expedition. The reel contains footage of a few villages in Pakistan as well, including a farmer plowing a field with two large pack animals, little girls weaving and people doing laundry along a river. The climbers are also shown preparing for the trip in Exeter, NH, where Charles S. Houston and Robert H. (Bob) Bates pack gear and supplies. Reel 66 also contains footage of the climbers arriving in Pakistan, including shots of Robert Craig, Peter Schoenning and Bob Bates as well as a procession through a street in Pakistan with men carrying banners where Bates can be seen waving at the camera. All of this is intercut with scenic mountain vistas. Donor Notes: "Logan/K2: good cuts"
