NHF viewing notes: Student interviews with Carlton Willey, baseball player. (Willey was from Cherryfield, Me. Played eight seasons in the major leagues, Milwaukee Braves and New York Mets, was Rookie of the Year in 1958.) Willey is in his 60s. Interviewed sitting against a cinderblock wall, inside. There is buzz in the audio, but it is comprehensible. Tape 1 (Camera 1) is much better quality than tape 2 (Camera 2). Willey played baseball in high school, then for the town team in Cherryfield. Played in the minor leagues for the Boston Braves, Toledo Sox and Quebec Braves. He was 18 years old when he played in Quebec; good teams, a lot of Cubans. Pitched in 5 minor league seasons. Pitched right handed. Best season of his life was 1957 in Wichita. Then in 1958 called up to the major leagues by the Braves after he pitched a no-hitter. Played the Yankees in the world series in 1958, he pitched one inning. Fidel Castro wanted to know why Willey didn't pitch the third game of the world series. Describes Casey Stengel and Hank Aaron. Played for Mets three years. Hit a grand slam home run as a pitcher. Finished his career in 1965. Discussion of baseball card collecting. B roll material at the end of tape 1: baseball cards; at the end of tape 2, photos of him in uniform, baseball cards, clippings. Tape 3 edited program dub, very bad video quality. Has titles, stills. Tape 3 also contains 'Portrait of MMHS' a videotape with music and effects about Machias Memorial High School which won an award at the state student film festival. A 1990 Bulldog Production. The school has 192 students.
