Narrator's stories include: 1) 'A Doctor of Laws.' A man who is both a justice of the peace and a doctor is called to marry a young couple. He gets confused and believes their love is a contagious disease causing irregular heartbeats and sweating. 2)'Simon Suggs.' A charismatic gambler convinces his fellow players to offer him loans to cover his gambling debts.
This segment is Part 2:'Simon Suggs.' Mother Wit or Mother Nature; A charismatic gambler, posing as a former army general and now a wealthy hog dealer, convinces his fellow players to offer him loans to cover his gambling debts; high stakes gambling turns into huge losses which Suggs leave his newly-found "nephew" to cover the next day; Suggs then lectures the "nephew" about the evils of gambling and tells him to learn the lesson of avoidance;
