film (240 ft.) : si., b&w ; 16 mm. reversal pos.
1942 – 1943
Collection contains home movies. "Cutting Ice" shows ice cutting operation by the Portland Sebago Ice Company using a gas-powered saw (Model T engine) and hand tools. Scenes include a conveyor moving ice from the pond into the ice house, and men using hand tools to guide blocks into place in the ice house.
Everett Johnson lived near the pond where he filmed the ice harvesting operations. Flavel Chaplin (1867-1948), general manager of the Portland Sebago Ice Company, appears in the film. The Portland Sebago Ice Company cut ice on Clark Pond (Long Creek Pond), in the Pleasantdale neighborhood of South Portland, Maine, and stored the ice in the company ice house. Everett Johnson worked for the Portland Sebago Ice Company not ice harvesting, but in the oil burner part of the business. He says that the ice house was torn down after the Maine Mall was built.
