Collection contains a factual film, "From Stump to Ship," about the year-round activities of the Machias Lumber Company. Footage includes scenes of winter logging in the forest with hand tools and horses, and spring long-log river driving. Also shown are loggers using peaveys and breaking up log jams, Alfred Ames and others in logging camp, camp buildings, horses twitching logs, and schooners in Machias being loaded with lumber and towed to sea by a sardine boat. Original footage was shot in 1930 by lumber company president Alfred Ames (1866-1950) and his friend Dr. Howard Kane. Ames subsequently sold his land to the Seaboard Paper Company, which became St. Regis and then Champion International Corporation. The film was reconstructed in 1985 with professional narrator Tim Sample recording the text of Ames' accompanying speech. Fogler Library Special Collections seeks to preserve materials related to the state of Maine. Ames Family Papers at Fogler Library, University of Maine. contain the papers of Alfred K. Ames.
