Sturdy, Herbert F. Collection

      1943 – 1968
      Herbert F. Sturdy and family lived in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles. Their home was named "Sturdywood". Three print ads for Rheingold Beer were shot using the exterior of the home. One of these was 100 feet long and hung in Grand Central Station. Two films were shot using exteriors of Sturdywood: "My Foolish Heart", 1949, staring Susan Hayward and Dana Andrews, directed by Mark Robson (Susan Hayward was nominated for Best Actress), and "Not as a Stranger", 1955, starring Olivia de Haviland, Robert Mitchum, Frank Sinatra, Broderick Crawford, directed by Stanley Kramer. 

      Susan Kohner, one of the neighbor's children who appears in some of the home movies, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Douglas Sirk's "Imitation of Life", in which she played Lana Turner's daughter. Her mother was actress Lupita Tovar. Kohner is the mother of Chris and Paul Weitz of "American Pie".
