The collection consists of 19 reels of black and white, and color 16 mm film. The [Joan Thurber Baldwin Collection] includes dramas, test footage, and home movies. These include autumn and winter scenes around Ogunquit, Maine, "Sea Mark," filmed on Monhegan Island, "Some Glimpses of 'Our Town'" which spoofs the Thornton Wilder play, "The Face of Fall", an anti-hunting drama, and "Just Golf" which documents a golf game between Baldwin and a friend. "A Certain Christmas" portrays Christmas Day rituals, and 'A Change of Scene' is also a drama with Joan Thurber Baldwin in the main role. The collection also contains the [A.J. Baldwin--home movies], four reels of home movies taken by Baldwin's father or grandfather in the late 1920s. The films were shot in New Jersey, Maine, South Carolina and Florida.
Joan Thurber Baldwin (1927-1990) was a painter, poet, and amateur architect, as well as a filmmaker. Born in New Jersey, she spent considerable time in Maine. She was a member of the Ogunquit Art Association, a professional group with roots in the Ogunquit art colony begun in the 1920s. Baldwin studied art at Sarah Lawrence College, earning an M.A. in 1952.
Other people featured in Baldwin's films are: Edith Reveley, a fellow Sarah Lawrence College alumna who went on to author several books, including 'In Good Faith', and Olthje Christine von Erpecom, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, and later drama teacher at Abbot Academy.
