    The Alan Baker Collection includes 15 Super 8mm film movies, totaling approximately 800 ft., 8 VHS tapes and 1 audio cassette tape, some material relevant to James Russell Wiggins. The Super8mm film is of a European trip during the 1970s that Baker took upon his retirement from his work in Philadelphia.
    Alan Baker bought the Ellsworth American newspaper from James Russell Wiggins in 1991. He was originally from Maine, but spent much of his adult life away from the state, returning as general manager in 1986 to run the newspaper under Wiggins. He had previously worked for MacMillan Company in Philadelphia. He became president of the Katharine Gibbs chain of secretarial schools and then of the Berlitz Schools of Languages. He became managing director of Collier Macmillan, Ltd. in London in 1973. Baker was elected vice president of Macmillan, Inc. in 1972 and became vice chairman of the company’s board of directors in 1976.
